The New iPod

Apple has done it again. Hot off the heels of the iPod Nano's introduction five weeks ago, Steve Jobs, at a special event titled "One More Thing..." unveiled the much anticipated video iPod called The iPod. Itunes 6, video support in iTunes, new iMacs and a really cool Media Center PC function in the new iMacs called Front Row were also announced. You can read more about these at our tecnology and entertainment news site, TheNerdcast.com. We wrote a short article about the announcements and will have more as soon as we get a chance to play with them.

For now I just want to point out a few key points of the iPod with a full review to follow as soon as mine arrives.

First up is the just how thin these new iPods are. From the picture below, you can see that compared to the regular 20GB color iPod that the 30GB and 60GB video iPods are slimmer and have more storage. Tremedous! =)

Second, the screen is much larger than the previous iPods, Color and Photo. Obviously this is because it plays video which requires a larger screen to make it worth viewing video.

Third, the specs. Nothing too surprising other than just how thin the new iPod is and how much storage is crammed into such a small space.

Specs: The 60GB iPod is 0.55 inches deep, 2.4 inches wide, 4.1 inches tall and weighs 5.5 ounces.

The 30GB is 0.43 inches (thats less than half an inch!) deep, same width and height as the 60GB and weighs only 4.8 ounces.

Welcome to the Family

If you have any previous version of the iPod or a mini and are looking to upgrade, or if you've never owned an iPod, this is your reason to get one. Apple has streamlined the entire iPod family, making it easier to pick which one you want. Now there are only 3 types of iPods - the Shuffle, Nano and iPod, each with two different capacities. No longer will you be intimidated by all of the different types of iPods. With the new video-capable iPod, we see the culmination of the iPod. Hello video, welcome to the iPod family.

Since i live in Pensacola, Florida, i am evacuating. I have enabled this blog so i can update it from my phone. I'll give a quick status report here. Most likely on traffic, gas, and what not. Just quick posts.

Why this blog? Because i need the server that this site is on to not go down. My personal blog is hosted in Pensacola (at the college UWF) and if they lose power, its bye bye updates.

So i did it. I got the domain www.defiradio.com from GoDaddy.com. They made it so easy and their console to manage my account is easy to use. Top notch guys, so if you're looking for a place to buy a domain name from, GoDaddy.com is it. And its cheap! =)

Odeo First Impressions

I was recently invited to the Odeo beta. I've been playing around with it and have decided to write up a little "First Impressions" thing. I wrote it as i went through Odeo the first time i logged in.

If you haven't heard of Odeo, its a website and a program that let's you subscribe to and download podcasts. Its goal is to make it easier for people to listen to podcasts.

Ben Taylor and I just finished up a HOWTO we have been working on. We started it before iTunes 4.9 came out, so iTunes 4.9 is not covered in it. We are putting the finishing touches on our iTunes 4.9 HOWTO so stay tuned!

For now, you can read HOWTO Subscribe to Podcasts. In it we tell you how to install the most popular podcatching software and how to subscribe to a podcast. Very helpful if you are not using iTunes 4.9. We feel its helpful even if you are using iTunes 4.9 so you can appreciate just how far podcasts have come since October 2004.

Here it is!! The Top 10 At 10! It took for friggin' ever, i know. But its well worth it i promise.

Why is it worth it? Well funny you should ask! So much less of me going "Ilove that band. They're great" and more music to rock your eardrums.

It was recorded using my crappy mic but this episode we bid farewell to the Altec Lansing AHS-202. It served me well to get started but its just a cheap mic headset combo. I got it at Target for USD$10.

For show 11 we'll have a new setup! I'm super stoked about my new microphone and stuff but i'll share it all later. For now, show notes!

iTunes 4.9

iTunes 4.9 came out and can we say "Holy crap!"?

It not only supports RSS feeds but when you update your iPod's firmware (via iPod Updater) you will now notice another category called Podcasts. And guess what? iTunes grabs the show notes for a podcast and displays them on your iPod. How cool is that?

I'll share more with you later. Right now, i'm trying to get listed in iTunes.

iPodderX...for Windows!

During the Wizards of Technology Podcast, Thunderstone Media announced that they are working on a version of iPodderX for Windows.

iPodderX is a Mac only media aggregator that comes in two versions. One you pay for, and a free one with some of its features removed. It is a very sexy application that is setup to look just like iTunes. If you're familiair with iTunes, you should have not problems trying to figure out iPodderX.

I really hope the Windows version is just as sexy as its Mac sibling. We all know that looks matter.

Awesome News for the Podcast World.

In the next few months, Apple will release iTunes 4.9, which will come with a built in podcast aggregator, making it easier than it already is to subscribe, listen, and transfer podcasts to your iPod. iTunes will make the standard process of entering the URL for a podcast feed look archaic.

The new version of iTunes will feature a podcast directory that looks very much like the flagship iTunes Music Store (iTMS). In this directory, you’ll be able to browse through thousands of different podcasts giving you the ability to download and or subscribe to at the click of a button. You will no longer need a separate program to do all of that work for you.

I feel that this will make it even easier on users, and it will help push this new medium forward.

At a technology conference on Monday, Jobs previewed iTunes version 4.9. The software allows users to click on and subscribe to different podcasts, then automatically delivers the shows to any connected iPod — far less cumbersome than the third-party applications many listeners now need.

The newest iTunes will include a directory of podcasts, and creators will be able to register their shows with Apple's iTunes Music Store.

"We think it's going to take podcasting mainstream, to where anyone can do it," Jobs told the gathering of software developers.

Jobs' support for podcasting could make the phenomenon more popular, particularly if the iTunes store becomes the Internet's de facto repository of podcasts. Since its launch two years ago, the store has sold more than 400 million songs.

Last month, Jobs said podcasts on iTunes would initially be free. But he's been coy about whether Apple would allow podcasters to sell premium content through iTunes — a move that would make Apple's music service compete against Audible.com and other sites that feature unique content.

Minus 200 - Boiling Over

Minus 200 began as a trio of brothers, Bree Beal on bass and lead vocals, Rane Beal on guitar and back up vocals, and Ty Beal on drums. In early 2002, the band acquired Kaelie Retts on electric violin and began wowing audiences at venues in the Phoenix area such as The Venue of Scottsdale, Bash on Ash, Hard Rock Café and Alice Cooper’s Town.

In August of 2004 the band joined forces with bass player Stephen Sinek (formerly of Dtailz) and released their self titled EP (engineered by Danny Wright- Maroon 5, Death Row Records). Stillman - Born for Show

The creative outlet of one man – Chaz Craik. Not only can he produce, but he is also an amazing musician. All of the instrumentation is his own, except for the drums. Chaz had a rising alt-country star Lucky Jim lay down the beats on the pagan skins.

First and foremost a bass player, Chaz has an uncanny ability to to understand how songs fit together. And from the tracks on the Weightless EP, you can really tell that this producer meets songwriter meets musician is going to be well on his way.

Buffalo Song - Glorious Tonight
This song comes from his When The Clouds Grew Roots CD.

Buffalo Son is Blake Woessner. These songs are his vision of “songs from the porch swing.”

Blake is the son of a Blues-harmonica father and an artist mother who raised him in California. Soon after they would move to New York City where Blake would begin playing dark taverns and bright bonfires. These gigs soon paid off in the form of better gigs on rooftops, in bars, and a weekly appearance in a café in Brooklyn.

Writing most of his music on a fire-escape while staring up at the New York sky, vocal melodies remain the “skin and bones” of his songs.

Buffalo Son, from California to the New York Islands has lived and felt what it is to be human. Now he wants to sing about it. Listen up.

Averi - For Better or Worse
I am still blown away by this CD. It helped get me through a little trouble spot i had this past week. =) Don't you love it when music can help you do that?

The Mod-est Lads - She Could Be in the Beatles
From their Trouser Load of Love CD (the only five songs known to have been recorded by The Mod-est Lads) "She Could Be in the Beatles" is a great example of the catchy, hip-shaking beats and light-hearted, fun lyrics.

Depending on who you talk to determines which version of The Mod-est Lads' history you will get. Some say they were the hottest thing out of Bladderpool, England in 1966. Destined for superstardom they just disappeared.

Others (i.e., crackpots and cospiracy theorists) say that they are eccentric sausage ranchers from Iowa who grew tired of creating elaborate crop circle hoaxes and decided to pass themselves off as long lost rock and roll sensations from Bladderpool. You decide.

The Clarkes - Face To the Ground
Not much is known about this group other than they can play some good music! =) As soon as i know more, you will know more. Deal?

The Willis - Jimmy Fallon

Oshkosh's The Willis' pop-inflected sound is complimented by diverse textures, unconventional instruments (trash can lids for example), resisting sonic, tonal, and rhythmic conventions with arrangements that don't sacrifice rock.
The Willis' forthcoming album bathtub.lightbulb.heartattack promises to be an adventure in the sonic realm.

Hera Crush - Shout
First off i accidentally said that Tears for Fears originally did this song. Now i know i'll get flamed and am sorry. I wasn't thinking straight. I was inebriated.

Second, Hera Crush is a band obsessed with contrasts. We like to move from beautiful, fragile melody to vicious, squalling noise. Lots of bands write good songs, and
we like many of them, famous and non-famous. But not many go either as
quiet or as loud as they do. And even fewer promise a love child conceived in
a brief coming together of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke and Layne Staley singing over a wall of sound that veers between gentle, Smiths-like calm to schizophrenic "oh dear, the Pumpkins and Rage are fighting again" carnage.

I am so sorry that is has been 13 days since the last show. I had some personal things come up that almost prevented me from checking e-mail! But its here with 9 soon to follow! So lets keep rocking and thanks for your patience! =D

Ghotti - Sunflowers

Another amazing group from the UK, Brighton based Ghotti are Pat on Drums, Robin on Bass, Ugo on Guitar and Howard on Vocals and guitar. However as they all play each others instruments, this can change.

Having been good friends for a number of years, the band was formed in 2001 when Howard and Ugo bribed, coerced, drugged and threatened them all into a rehearsal room.

Since then they have worked solidly together to develop the Ghotti sound. Ghotti tries to combine intelligent lyrical content with strong melodic structure and sharp beats, wandering somewhere between rock, soul, funk and a hard place!

Sunflowers just grabbed me from the beginning, so i felt it only natural to start this show off with them!

They are working on their soon-to-be-released EP so keep checking their site Ghotti.com for more info.

Jupiter Sunrise - Kaye

Recently featured on NPR in a spot called Smaller Bands: Web Propels Music Sales.

Jupiter Sunrise are Mark Houlihan and Ben Karis on guitars & vocals Aaron Case on bass guitar and Chris Snykus on drums and vocals.

They are doing a massive tour so check right now. The entire month of May they're touring with Punchline and will be on the Warped tour.

2 Cubic Feet - Again
From Alberta, Canada, these guys know how to rock.

In the spring of 2003 they played their first live show; a half-hour set at a high school battle of the bands. They won the crowd over and quickly became addicted to the rush of performing. They began ritualistically practicing. Practice does pay off as they released their first CD in September of 2004.
Just as everything was falling into place, the drummer and 2 Cubic Feet went their separate ways. After many auditions a new drummer was found and they again rocked crowds. So much so that they won Essie's Canada Day Battle of the Bands.

Kill Dorothy - Crazy As Me

From London with an amazing international crew, Kill Dorothy is getting tremendous recognition from the London music scene.

Two weeks after they joined Broadjam.com their song Crazy As Me was in the Top 10 for UK and Europe categories.

Good Night City - Move On
This Atlanta-based rock quartet conjures up images of Butch Walker / now disbanded Marvelous 3.

Formed in early 2003, Good Night City takes an old-school approach to rocking out: relentless touring, catchy songs and an incredible stage show.

The group’s debut album, entitled You Are Almost There, was released on September 23, 2003. Produced by industry veteran Jeff Tomei (Matchbox Twenty, Smashing Pumpkins), it serves as a skillfully-crafted hint at the endless opportunities ahead of this great band.

The first single from that album - Move On - has received tons of air time on XM satellite radio, college radio, 99X in Atlanta among others. In August of 2004 Playboy.com chose Good Night City as one of the top 3 unsigned bands in America.

Remember their song Way We Go Out from De-Fi Radio 6? Well here is more Averi goodness for your ears to behold.

Get a CD (or two) from their site or in iTunes. Just type Averi into the search box and voila!!

And Then I Turned 7 - Sweet Dreams
Much to my disappointment, this band beat out Ronnie Day at Purevolume's battle of the bands. Well i shouldn't say disappointment, because ATIT7 is good. I was just really pulling for Ronnie! =)

Dane Schmidt realized that we all have problems in life as he was going through his own problems and put together "...and then I turned seven..." as something for people to relate to and understand. His ideas and songs were put onto a cd entitled "Broken Summer" in August of 2003 and was released with nothing short of success as an unsigned artist.

Well thats show. I'm sorry it took so longto get out, but i have been just buried under a ton of great music. I'm trying to get it out as fast as i can. =)

Thats right i caught the mellow bug that has been going around the podosphere lately. So sit back, turn the lights down, maybe light a candle or 7, and snuggle up with a bottle (or two) of wine.

Whats that? You don't have a wine? Well allow me to suggest two:

Bogle Vineyards' 2002 Merlot. A good wine for "just drinking" as well as many meals. Although it doesn't work with all pasta dishes and fish. Still, a wine worthy of your glass.

G|E|N|E|S|I|S by Hogue's 2001 Merlot. This wine goes great with any dish. We had it with tapas at The Global Grill and it complimented everything wonderfully. Extremely drinkable =) So far its my favorite merlot! =)

Just Six Spaces - The Same Beginning

Mike Mitchell and Steve Leighton say that they're a mix of tons stuff. Bands like Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Third Eye Blind, etc. I say they've got a great sound all their own.

An acoustic alt. rock band from Philadelphia, PA these two guitarists have hit on something that is sure to be huge. Check them out at MySpace.com. If you ask nicely, maybe they'll sell you a copy of their three song demo? I know i'm asking for it! =)

Stephen Kelly - Muck Mosey

This 23-year old singer/songwriter/athlete never ceases to amaze. He began writing and performing at 15. His sports quickly limited his time but he kept writing whenever he could.

this perseverance has paid off. You can hear it in his perfectly-crafted songs, such as Muck Mosey and Petty Cash. Go check him out at StephenKelly.org. There you get a full bio, a discography and a tour schedule. Even cool pictures! =)

Apollo 13 - Lusitania

Remember them from De-Fi Radio #5? Well here they are again to prove just how diverse their repetoire is. If you're not blown away by their versatility and excellent songs, you must not have ears.

And if you're still not convinced about this band, visit their site, apollothirteen.com. Chck out the Music section where you can listen to songs from their newest album Brave New World.

Rob Augustine - Where She Dreams

Rob is a one man act right now. He is looking to get a band going so if you play an instrument, go check him out! He also has a CD coming out soon.

Diego Davidenko - Not Quite Right

A refreshingly laidback, eclectic sound, Diego is certainly unique. In fact, he's the first artist featured in De-Fi Radio that is not from the USA! =) In 1982 he and his family relocated to Utica, NY. He started writing and recording his own songs at the age of 7!

Not only does he write music, he will also write original music in any style for any purpose! How cool is that?

Plus, at his site you can listen to his songs, his original compositions, and watch some movies.
Averi - Way We Go Out

Born in 1998 amongst the entertainment of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Averi is proof that good old fashioned word-of-mouth still creates something big. On their own they've sold over 15,000 CDs and amassed a huge fan base one person at a time. Not convinced they're great? Just ask the Boston Globe - they called Averi "one of the ten bands to watch in 2005" And check out The Boston Globe's feature of Averi.

I planned on having #6 out on Friday but i've caught some sort of cold thing. I have the whole show laid out: The songs are in picked and in the order that i want them. I just need to record it.

But i don't want to do that while i am all congested and have a frog voice. I oculdn't subject you all to that! =)

I'm taking all of my vitamins, drinking tea, eating Ricolas like they were one of the basic food groups, and drinking plenty of fluids. I also have given myself a NyQuil I.V. drip.

Started in 2001, they cut their first cd - a 6-track, all original songs album - in December of 2002. Excellent feedback poured in and they toured all over the South Wales area.
Not satisfied to sit on their butts, they recorded a 4 song EP called This is Bliss and again, got great reviews.
January 2004 brought the launch of www.ericband.co.uk and many more gigs throughout South Wales.
2005 brought the departure of founding member and bassist, Matt. But the show must go on. Another bassist (Adji) was found and ERIC is back in the studio, laying down more excellent tracks. Keep checking their website info about the music and to get some Free Music.

8:53 - 9:47 - Apollo 13 came about because The Band That Saved the World (a funk band in Lawrence, KS) didn't want to pay the exorbitant fees the local recording studios demanded. So Mike Macfarland (keys and rythm guitar in TBTSW) decided to build one. Once it was finished, Shannon Savoie (lead vocalist/ frontman for TBTSTW and a lifelong songwriter) felt comfortable enough to begin exploring is ideas with Mike. These secret recordings soon became highly saught after. The thing kept snow balling and soon it was evident that a new band would form. A band they would call "Apollo 13". So i've pulled my version of Insomnia Radio's Double Shots: Round 7. Mine is the rough version and is not the finished version. Once Jason lets me know that the finished version is available, i will link it and might make my version available as the "Demo" version of Double Shots. That way you can hear the real one (with sweeps and bumpers and all) and my version. The "demo" version.

Sorry to confuse everyone. I just let my excitement get the better of me. =) Next time, i'll try to keep my emotions in check so they don't cloud my judgement.

New Digs, New Music

I've moved everything for the podcasts over to this new place. It was previously at briandewitt.blogspot.com and the RSS feed for the podcast was a really long, difficult URL. Now it is just feeds.feedburner.com/dfr.

And obviously the new web address is defiradio.blogspot.com. =)

I'm working on getting some great new music, i almost have enough for two or three podcasts so i will be getting back after it! =)

Overheard in New York

I want to share a guilty pleasure of mine with all of you.

I've been reading it for quite some time and it never ceases to make me laugh.

Its called Overheard in New York.

You won't believe some of the things that these people overhear. Of course, living in New York City one probably overhears all kinds of crazy stuff.

The best you would overhear in Pensacola is useless talk about Hurricane Ivan (still!!), TV shows, how staff infections are "going around", parents lecturing kids, or pointless conversations. Its not that exciting of a town.

So, thanks to Overheard in New York i can get a quick laugh. I can also amuse myself by lying to my less Internet-savvy friends and say i overheard these conversations during travels about Pensacola.

You see? Read Overheard in New York and become a more interesting person! =) More people will want to hang out with you. You'll become popular. Everyone will hang on your every word. Then you'll become mayor.

And you should eat a Snicker's. Just to be safe.

Then go to the gym. So you can work off that Snicker's bar. And still be popular.

The First De-FI Radio Podcast is Here!

You may remember a long time ago that i experimented with ShoutCast for the WinAmp MP3 player. Obviously it was a little difficult to deal with so i didn't continue with it. Back then, i did call it De-FI Radio.

Well now De-FI Radio is back! Thats right, thanks to the beauty (and relative ease) of Podcasting De-FI Radio has risen from the grave.

Why have i dabbled in the art of podcasting? Well its simple. I've known about it for sometime, but finally downloaded iPodder, found three podcast feeds and gave them a listen in iTunes.

First up, of course was Adam Curry's The Daily Source Code.

And of course, not too long after i listened, i got to the March 2005 issue of Wired with a section, lo and behold, about Adam called Adam Curry Wants to Make You an iPod Radio Star.

I love it when personalities that not necessarily people, but the media, "forget about" for whatever reason end up doing something with technology and the like.

And who knew Adam was into all this??? =)

The simple way is to move your mouse cursor over the link, right-click the link and select "Copy Shortcut" if you're using Internet Explorer or right-click "Copy Link Location" on the (excellent) Firefox browser. Then go to the add feed line(the top-most text field in ) and either right-click and select "Paste" or left-click in the text field and hit Control+v. Then click the add button and you're all set.

Just don't forget to click the "Check for new podcasts" button =)
